It is unconstitutional to suspend anything except women. Senators S-l-s-b-r-y and McD-g-1 came to gether and looked and acted as brothers. They were dressed alike, each having asnutf colored butternut coat with two bottles of w hiskey in the coat-tails. Bottles ' partially empty. The gal lant Senators attention being called to the fact that his adversary was asleep aud snor ing, he replied that he was glad of it, he was used to sueh things; it gave him more time to establish his side of the question aud he went on "like an April shower.'" Storm Signals During Harvest. This plan of the storm signals during harvest is by means of the telegraph and cannon. -The telegraph is to convey the news ol a coming storm to each ot the county seats, hundreds!;; of miles in advance, in the direction that the"; to, b: found. storm is traveling. Then at each count v 1 seat a cannon is to be fired three times. which will warn farmers throughout the, whole couutrv that a storm is approaching, in time to get their grain or hay under cover or in a situation to shut out the rain. A telegraph company, bv arrangement w ith the countv officials in several of the States, is about to put the plan into practi cal operation, in time for the coming har vest. It is believed that a large 'portion of the many millions of dollars in grain and hay winch are annually damaged by rain during harvest will be saved by the univer sal adoption of this simple plan throughout the United States. The Presidency. Schuyler Colfax has been formally nominated for the Presidency, by Governor Smyth, the retiring Governor of New Hampshire. The Presidential elec tion being but eighteen months off, candi dates are, of course, appearing in all quar ters. A list of the men already named will be found to contain he names of Generals Grant, Sherman, Thomas, McClellan, and Butler, Andrew Johnson. Schuyler Colfax, Senators Wade, Sherman, Sumner and Fes senden, Thaddeus Stevens, Horatio Seymour and an indefinite number of other persons. It is highly probable that a Northern man for President, and a Southern man for Vice President, will be run by each party ; and there is no danger, from present appearances, that either office will go a-begging. PhiL Ledger. ! Twice a Widow in One Day. An ex traordinary incident in widowhood has just occurred at Thornley, a colliery village on the Hartlepool and ..Sunderland Railway, in England. On the second of March, a miner belonging to Thornley, named Nich olas Cook, aged about fifty years, was mar ried to a widow at Hettou-le Hole. Alter the ceremony was over, the couple adjourned to a friend's house and enjoyed, themselves in a suitable manner. They afterwards left for their own house, and on arriving at Thornley the wedding festivities were kept up with a joyous spirit. In the midst qf the hilarity the bridegroom seized with a choking sensation and fell down a corpse. An Lsdia-rubber Tonoce. Civilization. The Northern police pa pers came to lis lust wcik filled with ac counts ot little boys roasted over slow fires; young girls whipped : with rawhides until the flesh peeled from their bodies; wives having their, brains knocked out with flat irons; husbands poisoned; and poor negroes knocked, down in the streets just for fun, and because they happened to bo negroes.
